We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of former Mississippi State baseball standout, Caleb Reed. A beloved member of the Bulldog family, Caleb Reed died after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 35. His loss has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and the entire Mississippi State community.
Who was Caleb Reed
Caleb Reed was an integral part of the Bulldogs’ baseball program during his collegiate career from 2009 to 2012. A native of Cleveland, Mississippi, and a proud alumnus of Bayou Academy, he quickly made a name for himself on the mound in Starkville. Known for his composure, competitive spirit, and leadership, Caleb was a standout reliever and a trusted team captain. He played a vital role in leading the Bulldogs to the 2011 NCAA Super Regional and was instrumental in securing the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship—one of the proudest moments in the program’s recent history.
Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball All-SEC Awardee
As a key figure in the Mississippi State bullpen, Caleb earned All-SEC honors and delivered an impressive performance throughout his college career, recording 125 strikeouts and earning 12 saves. But his accomplishments extended beyond the diamond. Caleb was equally dedicated in the classroom, where he was recognized for his academic excellence as a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection. His work ethic, determination, and humility made him a role model both on and off the field.
Caleb Reed’s impact reached far beyond statistics. He was admired by his teammates and coaches for his quiet leadership, his fierce competitive drive, and the unwavering heart he brought to every game. His legacy is one of excellence, integrity, and strength.
Following the news of his passing, those who knew Caleb Reed personally and professionally have expressed their sorrow and shared heartfelt memories. One former competitor and friend recalled an early encounter with Caleb, saying, “When Caleb was an 8th grader, he pitched a complete game against us during my junior year at CA in the playoffs. Not only was it the fastest game I remember being a part of as he completely shut us down, but he also hit a bomb—actually, multiple bombs in that series.
It was clear then that he was destined for greatness on the diamond at Mississippi State, and he fulfilled every bit of that promise. Caleb came from a wonderful family. I still remember his older brother Will playing with us at Moorhead, and I can picture Caleb and their dad throwing behind the stands during our games, carefully following a pitch count. The love and dedication they shared for the game—and for each other—was something special.”
Caleb Reed leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten. He is survived by his loving wife and children, his devoted parents, his brother Will, and many extended family members, friends, teammates, and fans who were touched by his life and spirit.
We extend our deepest condolences to all of Caleb Reed’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Please keep his family—especially his wife and children—in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this heartbreaking loss. Caleb Reed will always be remembered not only for his talent on the field but for the character, courage, and kindness he embodied every single day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
At this time, the family of Caleb Reed has not yet released any public information regarding his funeral arrangements or memorial services. Understandably, they are navigating an incredibly painful and personal time of mourning, and are taking the space they need to grieve privately.
