A Friend and Mentor to Many
Following the announcement of his passing, one of Alex Delvecchio’s former mentees shared a poignant reflection:
“Heavy heart for Alex Delvecchio, who had a great impact on me. In high school, when he was GM/Coach of the Red Wings, he paid me in cash for helping after school. After I got my driver’s license, he trusted me with his car… I even made a run to Burger Chef for us. At 19, he hired me for a month at his private business in Detroit so I could afford summer school in London. That experience shaped the course of my life, exposing me to a whole new world and sparking my journalism career. It all started with Alex. May he rest in Peace and Power.”
These words reflect how Alex Delvecchio’s generosity and trust extended far beyond the rink—mentoring and supporting young people and giving them opportunities they might otherwise never have had.
