Kaylee Goncalves, a vibrant 21-year-old senior from Rathdrum, Idaho, was pursuing general studies at the University of Idaho’s College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. She was also an active member of the Alpha Phi sorority, where she embraced sisterhood and community with open arms.
Who was Kaylee Goncalves
In the wake of her tragic passing, Kaylee’s family remembered her as “the ultimate middle child”—a fierce protector with a strong sense of fairness and resolve. As their statement beautifully described:
“Kaylee was, is, and always will be our defender and protector. She was tough and fair. The ultimate middle child. She did absolutely everything she set her mind to. She didn’t hold back on love, fights or life. Kaylee was the ultimate go‑getter and constantly wanted an adventure.”
Her older sister Alivea echoed this sentiment, reflecting on Kaylee’s bright future:
“She had everything going for her, absolutely everything… She had her job lined up. She had worked really hard for it.”
Who were the Idaho Murder Victims
It was on the morning of November 13, 2022, that Kaylee Goncalves —along with close friends Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—was tragically found dead in a rental home. Autopsy reports suggested all four were likely asleep when they were attacked; many bore multiple stab wounds and signs of defensive injuries.
Kaylee and Madison shared a bond deeper than friendship—they grew up together in Northern Idaho and were inseparable since sixth grade. Madison’s stepfather, Scott Laramie, described their relationship as:
“They were true sisters, and our families grew bigger and better from that.”
During a memorial service, Kaylee’s mother spoke tenderly of this special connection:
“They were sisters; she was one of ours.”
Investigators believe that suspect Bryan Kohberger carried out the attack in the early hours of that November day. In recent developments, the victim’s father, Steve Goncalves, expressed anguish and frustration over a plea deal reportedly offered to Kohberger, accusing prosecutors of “rushing” and mishandling the agreement. In his words:
“We were not prepared for this – we had no idea that this was going to happen.”
At this time, Kaylee’s family has not released any information regarding her funeral services. In respect for their grief and privacy, we kindly ask the public to honor their wishes and allow them the space they need to mourn.
